Information for Candidates

Alberta’s Municipal Affairs made several changes to the Local Authority Elections Act and the Municipal Government Act in 2024 that significantly impacts candidates, including the rules and requirements surrounding campaign funding. The County of Paintearth recommends that anyone interested in becoming a candidate review the amended legislation:

(NEW) Notice of Intent to Run

Due to changes in the Local Authorities Election Act, a notice of Intent to Run must be filed with the County of Paintearth prior to accepting or expending any campaign funding.

Candidates can file their Intent to Run Form with the Returning Officer as follows:

The County will maintain a register of candidates who have provided notice of Intent to Run, which will be publicly available here on our website.

Nomination Period

The nomination period for the 2025 Municipal Election Opens January 1, 2025 and closes at 12:00 noon on Monday, September 22, 2025. During this period, nomination papers can be submitted at the main Administration office Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

In order for the nomination papers to be accepted, they must:

Be complete and in the prescribed forms, include a minimum number of signatures from electors eligible to vote in the 2025 Municipal Election and be a resident within the local jurisdiction on the date of signing.

Requests for meetings and submitting nomination packages to the Returning Officer can be made by appointment only.
